Ensure your Communication is Clear

In addition to working at multiple facilities, agency nurses do not work at the same site permanently. The importance of introducing themselves to staff nurses on duty cannot be overstated. To have exceptional communication skills, one must be able to ask as many questions as needed to complete the assignment.

Utilise all skills

As agency nurses, we learn a lot of skills and how to complete them correctly. Taking notes will help you remember what new skills and lessons you learned. You can build a strong reputation within the workforce by taking pride in the execution of your tasks.

Keep your training in mind. Remember that you have qualifications and you have been formally trained on many of the tasks, although, if the facility process differs slightly to your training, remember to ask why - you would most likely find a very good reason for the system to be in place.

Always be prepared

It is important that agency nurses should always remember the fundamentals of basic nursing. When working at a new facility:

  • Pre-Plan your travelling Route and Ensure you know where to go

  • Arrive early to ask for a thorough induction and get familiarised with the facility, storage, duties and requirements.

Having an open mind and being optimistic and approachable can certainly help you along the way.

Understand the Assignment

When you are assigned a post, you will receive 3 vital parts of information via the Staffshift app, which would give you guidance on the job description, and requirements.

  • Family – this would give you the type of ward or facility in which you will be working in

  • Profile – this would be the role that you would fill for the duration of your assignment

  • Location - and then of course the location, or place of work for the course of the assignment

You may need to refer to your training to ensure you recall all duties associated to your assignment profile.

Remember that when you join the British Nursing Association, you benefit from decades of experience, and a 24/7 support team who can offer you support and guidance along the way.
